Winter Tree ID in Flag Pond, TN

with Alea Rosinblum

Come learn all things Winter Tree ID!!

We will learn about the species that grow around us in southern Appalachia and how to use buds, bark and other identifying features to properly name our tree friends! Our goal is to have everyone leaving the class much more confident in their tree ID skills. The group size is limited so there will be plenty of time and space for questions.

We´ll start out the class on Katie´s land and get to know some vocabulary and botany terms that are important for tree identification. From there we will head up to national forest and check out more trees and practice our ID skills. At the end of the class we will gather back at Katie´s house for some warm tea, light refreshments and good conversation.

We will send you the address once you pay and sign up!

Who is our teacher? Meet Alia Rosinblum!

Alea Rosinblum will be leading the Winter Tree ID class on Feb 21, 2026. Her love of trees began on a 10 day backpacking excursion in Joyce Kilmer Wilderness area as a teenager in 2002, a time when the Hemlocks still stood proud and mighty. This love blossomed into devotion through discipline, as she attended the University of Vermont for Environmental Science. There, she had the opportunity to study dendrology with John Shane and forestry with William Keaton, both distinguished professors in their fields. In the following years, this foundational education in plant identification and ecosystem management helped form a career focused on riparian (stream-adjacent) and wetland monitoring and restoration in a variety of biomes throughout North Carolina and Southern Appalachia. Lately, Alea’s focus has been on providing secondary science education, and tending to her homestead on a beautifully forested parcel in Mars Hill, NC.
